Bath Doings

Historic Bath invites the traveler to spend a few relaxing days strolling through the pleasant parks overlooking the Kennebec River or rummaging through the many antique stores on Front Street. Beach lovers will find two sandy state park beaches within a short drive. The nationally acclaimed Maritime Museum, The Chocolate Church or the Art Gallery of Bowdoin College furnish exciting diversions on a rainy afternoon while short drives to Portland, Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor or Freeport (home of L.L. Bean) can satisfy every shopper's appetite. And speaking of appetites, the restaurants in the area serve marvelous seafood on tables overlooking the great bays and charming coves.

Things To Do
Chocolate Church Performing Arts Center

Just a walk down Washington St. is our local performing arts center. Throughout the year the Chocolate Church puts on first class performances of our favorite plays, especially during the Winter months. Adjacent is the newly renovated gallery displaying local artists.

During the summer months, the nearby Maine State Music Theatre offers a series of five major musical productions complete with Broadway casts. This is Maine's only professional music theater. Tickets can be ordered by calling (207) 725-8769. More...
Maine Maritime Museum

The Museum offers guided tours on an hourly basis from April 15 through October which are most informative.

In addition, there are Museum guided boat tours during season leaving their dock several times a day. These tours are about one hour in length and include a harbor view of the Bath Iron Works.

About once each week (more frequently during the summer season) the Museum offers a day-long, comprehensive boat excursion with a guide on board. More...
Downtown Bath

Nestled along the sparkling Kennebec River in Maine is a small jewel of a city. An old seafaring town, Bath has sailed gracefully into the present day bringing a taste of her history with her. About a dozen antique stores plus a like number of boutiques can be found off the brick sidewalks with gas lamp posts.

Cruises up and down the Kennebec River can be reserved from the City's docks. Guided fishing expeditions can be arranged along with kayak and sailboat rentals. Several excellent golf courses and municipal tennis courts are nearby. Within a few blocks is the YMCA with complete facilities for swimming, weight training and aerobics (and the Galen Moses House offers complimentary day memberships to our guests).
Popham Beach & Reid State Park

There are a number of beautiful beaches within a twenty minute drive of Bath. Two of the most splendid beaches are:

Popham Beach State Park: This beach has six miles of sand facing the ocean. There are changing facilities and showers. If you drive past the state parking lot to the end of Route 209 you come to Fort Popham, a never finished Civil War fort. The sunset views from either spot is a terrific experience. The beach is about twenty minutes from Bath.

Reid State Park: This beach has three miles of sandy shore and three miles of rocky shore. There are changing facilities and showers and also a snack bar.
Bath Iron Works

Builder of our Navy's Aegis Destroyers, BIW sits on the banks of the Kennebec River. Visitors can view the occasional launching of one of these spectacular ships. Naval ships can viewed from the Sagadahoc Bridge and by river cruises.

There are a number of opportunities to see inside the grounds of the Bath Iron Works (which builds the Aegis Class Destroyer for the Navy). There are bus tours twice a week offered through the Maine Maritime Museum. Also there are a least two ship launchings each year which depend on a ship's completion and the tidal charts. If you are interested in receiving advanced information on dates for these events, please email us.
