| Heritage homestay with spacious (TWO Queens), air-conditioned, en suite rooms. Fast internet and à la carte cooked breakfasts. Crystal chandeliers and high ceilings downstairs; views to the "Centre of New Zealand" and across Tasman Bay upstairs.
When our home was built in the latter part of the reign of Queen Victoria, it stood on the shore of Nelson's Haven, with Weka running up and down the strand.
Now the vibrant and exciting city of Nelson has grown up and outwards around Amber House, but our home remains a peaceful and helpful haven for travellers with all of our city's attractions just a short stroll away.
Our guests can amble to the nearby Miyazu traditional Japanese garden and listen to the water bell, take a look at the new wharekai on Whakatu Marae, or simply sit on our verandah and enjoy the fragrance of our Irish roses in the front garden.
On Friday afternoons, the Farmers Market is just opposite us in Founders Heritage Park while Saturday morning sees many of our guests off to visit the `World-famous-in-New Zealand' craft and artisan market in nearby Montgomery Square where they mingle with locals prodding organic vegetables.
Although crystal chandeliers hang from ceilings more than eleven feet high downstairs, we do have a new 21st Century hot water system, satellite dish, Broadband Internet and both our Blue and Rose Rooms have air-conditioning and en-suite facilities.
Upstairs, the en-suite Blue Room has its own verandahs with a view over Tasman Bay to the Arthur Range on one side and the Sugar Loaf and Botanical Hill (geographical Centre of New Zealand) from the other verandah.
All our rooms are BIG - large enough for two Queen Beds and our Green Room is very good value for families and those willing to share a bathroom.
Guests compliment us on our "Ulster Fry" cooked breakfasts or you can help yourself from a buffet any time if you`re watching your weight.
All long distance coaches stop on request right outside Amber House so you can lie in a bit longer. We have a Garage for Bikes and we grow many of our own vegetables organically in the sunniest place in New Zealand.
Because we have children at primary school we do not allow smoking anywhere on our land. (If you are a Smoker, then the Milton Chalet Motel is very good and just down the road and they do allow smoking outside your unit...)

|  | Blue Room
Our Blue Room is on the upper floor's North-East corner. Double glazed French windows open on to twin sheltered balconies overlooking our front rose garden with 272 degree views out over Tasman Bay to the (snow topped in winter and spring) Arthur Ranges to the North-west on one side and the Sugar Loaf and Botanical Hill (geographical Centre of New Zealand) 900 metres to the South-East from the other balcony.
The Blue Room room is furnished in more modern style with fitted carpet, desk, cordless DECT phone and the highest speed Broadband connection available in Nelson from Telecom NZ included in the price, together with your choice of cooked or continental breakfast.
Al Jazeera (in English), BBC World, Central China TV9 (in English), Deutsche Welle (in German and English), Maori TV (in English and Maori), Russia Today (in English) via geo-stationary satellite transmissions together with other local colour television channels. A small safe, with a combination you can set yourself, is provided for your valuables.
The Blue Room has a Daikin, reverse cycle, inverter aircon unit built into its East wall and argon gap, noise insulating, double glazing by Koemmerling of Germany. A shower, wash hand basin and WC are all en-suite and there is an adjacent seven foot square bathroom with hot tub.
Normally one "Black Maxipaedic firm premium double wool pillowtop posturised sleep system" queen-sized bed. (The Blue Room is popular with Honeymooners but is certainly large enough to introduce a second single bed upon at least 24 hours notice.)
Order a cooked breakfast of your choice and help yourself to the breakfast buffet and coffee, tea, Ovaltine, hot chocolate, Milo, fruit juice, spring water, biscuits, etc., in the downstairs Dining Room at any time.

| | Rose Room
The Rose Room has eleven foot high ceilings with twin crystal chandeliers and is furnished in late Victorian style. French windows open on to a verandah providing a separate private access to the irish rose garden at the front.
The Rose Room is air conditioned with a reverse cycle heat pump and has a cordless DECT 'phone, digital safe and 28 inch Fastext/Teletext colour TV. Wireless access to a high-speed internet connection is available upon request and allocation of a password. Shower, wash hand basin and WC are all en-suite.
The Rose Room has two Orthopaedic Queen-size beds so again a maximum of four persons can be accommodated.
A cooked breakfast of your choice is included in the Rose Room prices - or you may choose to help yourself to a free 'continental style' buffet breakfast at any time between 04:00 and 10:00hrs in the morning. Fruit, biscuits and hot or cold drinks are also available free of charge at any time in the adjacent Dining Room. | Room Rate

Directions
|
| All long distance buses (and the City Tour and local buses) stop right outside Amber House.
Nelson Airport is 7km away (a Shuttle Bus meets each flight and charges approximately $12.00 per passenger to Amber House).
State Highway 6 to the Trafalgar Street roundabout, turn South on Trafalgar St (Nelson's main shopping street), then 1st road on left (Wainui St) becomes Weka Street after 260 metres and 46 Weka Street is then the large, white, two storey house on the right after another 480m.
On foot or driving from the DOC Nelson Region Visitor's Centre: Exit the Centre. Turn right and right again into Trafalgar Street. Head north for 400m (towards SH6) and take the 4th turn right into Wainui St which becomes Weka Street after 260m. |
