| Pomar Velho (The Old Orchard) is a farmhouse built 200 years ago, converted and completely restored to offer high quality, officially recognized “Turismo Rural” guest house accommodation and a wholesome mixture of Mediterranean and British cooking. Surrounded by the stunning countryside of the Natural Park of São Mamede and sitting in 5 acres of private grounds, it has its own natural spring which flows into a burbling brook below. Pomar Velho is owned and run by Carole and Ken. The house comprises 7 double bedrooms all en suite, 4 of which are offered on a Bed and Breakfast and optional evening meal basis. It has a large dining room containing an old stone traditional bread oven and an equally large family room with dartboard, card table and satellite TV with video facilities. Guests are encouraged to make full use of these facilities. Outside there are large terraces back and front and a 10 metre swimming pool with accompanying sun deck and terrace. Guests may also wish to stroll around the 5 acre grounds or walk 500 metres to the Portuguese village of Galegos or the Spanish village of Fonteneira. It’s an ideal place to spend your holidays playing golf at the nearby 18 hole Ammaia course, following one of the official park walking trails, bird watching for the Griffin Vultures, Bee Eaters and Eagles that are just a few of the species you can find here, visiting local vineyards, or indulging an interest in history with the Unesco World Heritage site of Marvão a few kms away, and vestiges of megalithic monuments and Roman villages. On the other hand you can always laze by the pool and then venture out to enjoy local Portuguese cuisine or slip into Spain and experience a different culture.

Directions
| From Lisbon take the motorway to the Algarve. After about 55 kms take the exit to Espanha/Evora. Leave at Estremoz following the sign to Portalegre. When you arrive at Portalegre (55 kms) stay on the by pass and don’t enter the city. Follow signs for Marvão until Portagem. Here do NOT take the road marked Marvão but take the right fork and highway to ESPANHA and GALEGOS. After about 5 kms you’ll see the turning on the left to GALEGOS . The road descends into the village. Do not turn right but meander through the chicane between the buildings, out the other side of the village where the road starts to descend again. When the road starts to flatten out you’ll see a road on the left just before a small bridge and then almost immediately another track on the right which is the one you take to Pomar Velho.
