Things To Do
|
| The Brenta Riviera is set on the banks of the river that flows from Padua to the Venice Lagoon. Populated as early as the 5th Century A.D. , its importance grew in 1400 when Venice extended its dominion to all of the Veneto interland.
The Venetian Patricians bought large estates on the Brenta Riverside and fascinated by the beauty of its landscapes it was turned into a holiday location. From 1500 to 1700 they built imposing villas such as the Foscari Villa in Malcontenta, the Valmarana and Widmann Villas in Mira and the Pisani Villa in Strà , a real Ducal Palace on the mainland, where you can find its well-known maze of renaissance style hedges. However, the main attraction is the river with its calm waters that flow from bend to bend , waiting to be sailed on in order to offer the same lapses that Goldoni, Casanova, Goethe and D’Annunzio experienced. As the relationship between Padua and Venice intensified in the 1400’s , boats became the main mean of transportation used at that time. A regular boat service was set up along the Brenta Riviera in 1700. Since the so called Padua Boat was considered slow and of low- quality, a new barge was introduced called the “ Burchiello “ mean of transportation used by the best companies that later became customary. Nowadays, the Brenta Riviera means visits inside antique Villas, unique nature walks, relaxing river cruises and excellent seafood cuisine inspired by Venetian tradition. The Venice Lagoon, unique ecosystem in the world has a surface of 50 square kilometres and is connected to the Adriatic Sea by three harbour openings, among which the S. Nicolò of the Lido where fabulous cruise ships enter to cross the S. Marco basin to go to the marina docks. North of the island are situated the island of Murano, famous for its glass works, Burano, picturesque fishermen’s village with beautifully coloured houses and Torcello, first lagoon settlement where you can find splendid Byzantine mosaics in its Cathedral.
Venice, is located south of the lagoon. Wonderful city, built on 118 islands, separated by 160 canals and crossed by more then 400 bridges. Traditionally born in the 5th Century as refuge for the people living on the coast during the Barbarian invasion. It was a rich and powerful marine Republic until the end of the XVIII th century. The Grand Canal divides the city in two parts and is the main waterway on which face 100 palaces belonging to the Serenissima noble families. It is crossed by the Rialto Bridge, the most famous in the city with its arcades and local shops. For luxury shopping you can visit the many haberdasheries and local shops situated along the way from Rialto to S.Marco. S. Mark’s Square, one of the most beautiful in the world, hosting the city’s Cathedral and the Ducal Palace - the Doge’s official residence and government site, was and still is the centre of Venetian life. Among the numerous treasures of the city can be found the Salute Church , Venetian Baroque work of art, the Redentore church with its façade by Palladio and the magnificent Gothic Dei Frari church frescoed by Tiziano and pantheon of Venetian glories.
The Fenice Theatre for those who love opera, recently inaugurated after the 1996 fire. Art lovers will surely appreciate the Accademia galleries, the greatest collection of Venetian paintings from the XIV th to the XVIII th century. The Peggy Guggenheim collection of contemporary art hosts masterpieces by Klee, Picasso and Kandiskij . The Venice Biennale, world- famous international art and architecture exhibition .
You can’t miss out on the well-known Cinema Festival that takes place every year in September, when the Lido of Venice comes to life once again as in its antique splendour.
If you want to get a real taste of the Venetian way of life you must visit the popular district of Castello and the lively S. Polo and S. Margherita “ campi” where you can stop in one of the local food-bars called “ bacari “ and taste the “ ciccheti “ typical Venetian appetizers with a good glass of wine called “ombra “.
