Castro, the ancient Castrum Minervae, rises close to a headland projected towards the Adriatic sea, inside a suggestive rocky inlet, 20 km South of Otranto. The ancient area of the town (Castro Alta), lies on the highest part of the hill. Castro Alta is a typical medieval village situated in a wonderful panoramic position at abuot 100 meters above sea level, from which it dominates the lowest part of the town (Castro Marina). The town is surrounded by the ancient walls (having a total perimeter of about 700 meters) fortified with an imposing castle. From the walls you can have one of the best view of the Salento's coast. In particular limpid days, during the dawn and the sunset, are visible, on the horizon, the contours of the Albania's mountains (about 80 km distance from Castro).
